EU Mandates USB-C Charging for All Laptops – New Regulation Takes Effect Today
BRUSSELS, April 28, 2026 – The second phase of the EU Common Charger Directive takes effect today, requiring all laptops sold in the EU to support USB-C charging with USB-PD protocol. Non-compliant laptops must be immediately removed from sale.
The first phase covered 12 categories of small electronics (smartphones, tablets, cameras, etc.) since December 2024. Today's expansion adds laptops to the mandate.
Manufacturers may still use proprietary ports (e.g., MagSafe), but USB-C must remain an available alternative.
The regulation is expected to save EU consumers approximately €250 million per year and reduce electronic waste.
